課程概述

This course is designed for the IB-major students in Taiwan (in Asia, or on Earth) to examine managerial issues of international business by laying ground and a framework them. In addition, this course also serves as a cornerstone between freshmen’s basis and advanced/diverse courses.  

課程目標
Specifically, the instructor intends to cultivate students the following capabilities:
a) to become familiar with the field of IB, the terms used in this profession (e.g., MNEs – Multinational Enterprises), and various forms of modes and its operations across national boundaries;
b) to analyze the strategic issues that most MNEs face, such as the environmental, competitive, strategic, organizational, and management challenge;
c) to appreciate and develop core decision-making skills, by acting as multinational executive, in managing simple and diversified MNEs situated in dispersed geography.

Class participation 
10% 
You are expected to contribute your best to class discussion by participate in the real classroom and the virtual classroom over the ceiba. This portion of grade is determined by (i) how well you articulate your views and analyses and (ii) how well you make your argument and build upon others'. Specifically, you can participate by providing summary and comments on the Does Geography Matter?, Looking-to-the-Future or the end-of-chapter case. Technically, these preparation should be limited to 300 words and post onto the course website 24-hour ahead of our meeting.

Group Participation 
15% 
There will be 13 opening-business-cases for this course. To facilitate the flows of the class, you should browse opening-business-case for preparation. Two to three groups will be cold called to summarize your group discussion in class and provide local examples for illustration. After class each group shall post onto ceiba their discussion and comments of cases. Technically, these assignments should be around 600-900 words and post onto the course website 48-hour after class.

Midterm Exam 
25% 
Two exams are designed to divide the course load in half; each covers about 8 chapters of the textbook. The format will be a combination of multiple choice (40%), terminology (30%), and short-essay (30%). Also note that no make-up text will be provided in any circumstance.

Term Paper 
25% 
There will be 13 issues according to Point-Counterpoint. Each designated group will have 20’ (10-15 ppt slides approximately) for synopsis and some 10’ for Q&A; however, they can be used jointly. Organization of your group presentation and slides (in PPT備忘稿 format) must focus on the problem identification, pros and cons, and local examples which are required to provide to verify those viewpoints. Slide files must be upload onto the course website 24-hour after presentation. At the end of the semester, each group should submit a term paper based on the presentation. The ideal length of your term paper should be approximately 20 ppt slides, excluding attachments such as figures, tables and reference.
